Wood is a soft composite, not “hardwood” as stated in the description. Relatively light contact with the pieces during assembly instantly left scratches (white under the black paint). Fortunately I had pretty good luck coloring in the scratches with a black Sharpie pen, but closer inspection reveal the flaws fairly easily. While putting our television up on the stand, we allowed it to briefly rest on the surface of the TV stand and that too left a couple visible indentations in the “wood”.
The stand comes competely unassembled. Our shipment was missing 8 screws (antiqued brass colored, so not something we could find in any store). Home Decorators was very easy to work with and they offered a decent sized store credit, a somewhat smaller cash credit, or the option of shipping it all back at their expense for an exchange. Since I spent countless hours assembling the beast, I was in no mood to ship it all back (probably impossible for me to figure out how to jigsaw it all back into the larg box in any case), so I took the cash credit. I still can’t find the right screws, so I’ll either get something close and try to make it look “old” myself, or give up and replace all the screws with non-antiqued screws. No complaints at all about working with Home Decorators to resolve this problem.
Unless you’re pretty good with asssembling things, think twice about this product. The instructions are Excellent and all parts are well labeled — the problem is that if you can’t line up door hinges accurately, etc., the unit is going to show all the flaws of your efforts. The product comes with pre-drilled holes, but as I found out, those holes aren’t quite lined up that well so the finished product looks sloppy (wide gap between doors on one side, small gap on other side, for example). I blame myself for the way it looks, but I should have known better. Don’t expect their guideholes to lead to a good looking end-product.
Finally, the red streaks that are supposed to make this look “antiqued” do not look like that at all. The smooth finish looks very factory-like and the red streaks look pretty lame–almost like a weak afterthought. while the style may be traditional, the look ends up being less appealing than expected. I would suggest paying a few more bucks at an antique store for an authentic, full-assembled, table.
For all its faults, it’s not a Bad piece. Does the job and blends in fine with an Asian-themed decor. Considering how soft the wood and finish are, however, I don’t think the stand will survive a move to another home.
